The decisions made by the Facility Management department have a great influence on the well-being of employees. The management of indoor climate, catering and other facilities within the building has direct impact on employees and guests. The Facility Manager contributes to the health of employees and therefore the job satisfaction and overall feeling of employees. A ‘healthy’ workplace also helps in making a difference in the ‘War-On-Talent’. Ensuring healthy lives and promoting the well-being at all ages is essential to sustainable development.
The International WELL Building Institute (IWBI) created the WELL-standard. This standard indicates the effect of a building on employees’ health and well-being. The Facilities Department is in this way responsible for providing a pleasant working environment to increase happiness and vitality of employees.
Villa Pardoes is a charity organisation that offers 600 families per year a free ‘holiday experience’. These families have one thing in common, a young child with a serious illness.
Villa Pardoes plays a stimulating role in the recovery process of the sick child and the psychosocial well-being of the other family members. It is not only about accommodation and available facilities, but also about the meetings and joint activities in the Villa with other families in the same situation. Villa Pardoes invites families in the Villa and facilitate a memorable holiday for these families where they can relax and heal. Villa Pardoes offers a healing environment.
To realise a healing environment, it is of great importance to implement the following conditions in detail: CO2 level below 600 ppm, decibel level below 60dB(A), light incidence of 750 lumens, presence of plants, the feeling of having privacy, feeling secure, social support, the feeling of clean and freshness and having positive distractions.
An example of how Villa Pardoes implements the feeling of privacy is simply in the design of the building. Seen from above, the building looks like a snail. The heart of the building is in the centre of the snail, this is where all the group activities are organised. The individual houses are located on the outer ring of the Villa. In this way the houses provide privacy for the families.
